Gluing Veneer Down With PVA Glue And An Iron. Is it OK to put weights On Top of The Veneered Surface To Keep The Veneer Flat While The Glue Dries?

Q. Hey Bob, I see you recommend 3 methods to adhere veneer to a surface, and using a PVA method is best. I prefer that to contact cement because these are smaller surfaces each side. I know how to prep the MDF. I have read that you can apply the veneer and roll, then iron it.

When using PVA glue to mount the veneer, will rolling and/or just adding even weight on top of the veneered surface be sufficient for proper bonding? I can glue the vfeneer to one side or two opposite sides easily enough.

I plan to use a roller to remove any possible bubbling of the veneer, and then I plan to use weights to hold the veneer in place while the glue dries.

Another question: Where are you shipping from so I can estimate shipping costs? I am in Oregon. Thank you!

Answer. Yes, you can use an iron to apply heat through the veneered surface to make the PVA glue “set up” and bond when applying your veneer.Just be sure to check on the internet for some instructions for best results.

As for using the PVA glue, and applying weights to the surface while the glue dries ---NO and NO!! ---Don’t do this!!

The veneer will not bond properly with weights, and you will probably end up with areas that don’t get glued down or some areas where the veneer bubbles.

When gluing veneer down, you need lots of pressure all over the entire surface, and this cannot be accomplished with weights.

Shipping costs: Just start your veneer order on my website. You will get to the point where the shipping cost pops up.There’s no guesswork. You will know exactly how much it costs to ship your veneer. If you aren’t satisfied, you can abort your veneer order and the order will be cancelled – nothing will be charged to your credit card.
