Gluing wood veneer to EPA foam?

Q. Hi Bob Morgan, Can I glue your wood veneers to EPS foam? How so, what glue would I use and do you sell it?
Many thanks, Mary

A. Hi Mary – the short answer is “maybe, but probably not”. The “probably not” is the most important part.

But: if you experiment with the right kind of glue, you might be able to do this. I’m betting that a solvent based glue will not work at all, as it will attack the EPS foam.

Instead, I’d experiment with some water based contact cement. I’d try to use the water based contact cement as directed on the can (usually a couple of coats on the foam surface and 2 coats on the back of the veneer)

I’d also experiment with a water based contact cement/PSA peel and stick veneer combination-- – 2 or more coats on the EPS foam, then stick down the peel and stick veneer (do not put any contact cement on the peel and stick veneer).

You are in no man’s land.Good luck!

Regards,

Bob Morgan, pres.
