Should I use the Paper backed veneer or 2 ply wood backed veneer? Can I use paper backed veneer and wood backed veneer interchangeably?

"Should I use the thinner (1/64) paper backed veneer for drawer faces and the thicker (3/64) 2 ply wood backed veneer for tops?  Can I use the paper backed veneer and/or the 2 ply wood backed veneer interchangeably?  Or - is the paper backed veneer more suited to some applications than the 2 ply wood backed veneer (or vice versa)?  Don

Hello Don -

I think that you should use the paper backed veneer on the drawer fronts if they are curved.  Otherwise, unless there is a need for  a certain thickness, you can use the paper backed veneer or the wood backed veneer.  Generally speaking, I prefer the 2 ply wood backed veneer over the paper backed veneer. But not always!  Sometimes the paper backed veneer is the way to go.  Even so, it is hard to go wrong, either way you go.

The wood backed veneer is sturdier, more forgiving, and it resists stress and strain if the substrate isn't stable.  The wood backed veneer is also more resistant to damage.

Having said that, I believe that you can use either the paper backed or wood backed veneer for drawers, sides, tops, etc. on your project and you will have good results.  (unless your drawer fronts are curved - in which case, the paper backed veneer would be your best choice for the drawers).

If the surface that you are veneering has dents and dings, and you don't want to sand and fill the surface damage, the 2 ply wood backed veneer is your best choice. Otherwise, if you sand and fill the surface damage, you can use the paper backed veneer with equally good results.

All in all, the paper backed veneer and the wood backed veneer are very good, quality products.    You can use either of them on a myriad of projects with good results.  If all things are equal, I do prefer the 2 ply wood backed veneers.

Every veneering project is different.  Each project has its own needs and considerations. Whether you use paper backed veneer or wood backed veneer is your decision, having considered what you are wanting to accomplish. Don't be afraid to take the plunge.  Our paper backed veneers and our wood backed veneers are appropriate for most any veneering project.
