Veneering an Exterior Door, Use Contact Cement or Peel and Stick Veneer For an Exterior Door?, Use Paper Backed or Wood Backed Veneer On An Exterior Door?

Hi Bob Morgan,

Hi Bob, I am doing an Entrance door makeover veneering project and I’m having trouble with the paper backed veneer that I bought from Amazon.I’m using contact cement to glue the veneer down, but it keeps bubbling on me.
1) Is contact cement a wrong glue to use for exterior door? Any good glue that you can recommend?
2) I am using paper back veneer. Do I need to buy wood back veneer instead?
3) Your site says peel and stick option. Is peel and stick good option for exterior use?

Your insight on this will be much appreciated. I will order from your store accordingly based on the guidance I receive from you.

Paul

Hi Paul,

When you apply veneer to an exterior door, you are in no man's land unless you use a waterproof glue, such as Titebond 3. For this, you will need to use a vacuum bag. If you are a gambling man,

you could use our 2 ply peel and stick veneer. Be sure to prep the surface according to the tutorials and videos on my website. Then, be sure to put a good varnish finish on the veneered surface. At least 3 coats. You will probably need to apply the finish again every 2 or 3 years.

For extra adherence, put 2 coats of contact cement on the surface to be veneered. Let dry and let dry between coats. Do not put the contact cement on the peel and stick adhesive. Peel off the release paper from the back of the veneer and stick it down onto the contact cemented surface. It will stick like a gorilla.

Once again, however - applying veneer to an exterior surface without using a waterproof glue and vacuum bag is risky.

Regards,

Bob Morgan
